Ride smart

Safety on every ride

We're an unstructured group and every rider is responsible for their own safety — so let's make good decisions together. Here's what we ask of everyone who rolls with us.

🪖 Every ride

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Bring a water bottle — pre-hydrate on hot days.
  • Ride a bike that's in good working order.
  • Keep right, and watch for slowing or turning riders ahead.
  • Look out for one another; regroup at safe stopping points.

🌙 Full-moon & night rides

  • Charged headlight and taillight — required.
  • Spare inner tube, a bike lock, and water.
  • Fresh sealant in tires/tubes (refresh every 3–6 months).
  • Tires 38mm (1.5") or wider for the Cowboy Trail.
  • The trail can be soft, dark, and have animal holes — ride within your limits.

🥵 Hot-weather riding

  • Hydrate all day, not just on the bike — water and electrolytes.
  • Watch for dizziness, headache, cramps, nausea, or confusion.
  • Stop in the shade to cool down — hydration alone isn't enough.
  • Look out for each other and act fast if someone overheats.

Nebraska law

Phones down. Speeds down. Move over.

Nebraska law protects vulnerable road users like cyclists. Motorists must slow down and move over to pass. If you're behind the wheel, be patient — a cyclist has just as much right to the road as you do.

Share the road, both ways

Most close calls come down to a moment of inattention — from a driver or a rider. Keep your head on a swivel, make eye contact at intersections, and don't leave a motorist just enough room to squeeze by. Better they wait a few seconds for a safe pass.

When we ride as a group, we keep to the right as safely as possible, signal our moves, and call out hazards down the line. Predictable riders are safe riders.

The fine print: Ride Norfolk is an unstructured group of individual cyclists who gather for group rides. By taking part, each rider recognizes they are solely and individually responsible for their own health and safety.
